Double welting / Double piping foot

The double welting/double piping foot is a multi-use foot for anything that involves making, covering, or attaching sets of single or double piping or welting. It has two grooves or tunnels on the bottom to allow one or two lines of piping or cord to run smoothly underneath. You can use this foot to:

●     make single or double piping from bias tape and cord

●     couch cord/piping onto your fabric

●     attach covered single or double piping to your project

Your double piping foot has a maximum stitch width of 4mm, and can be used with 4-6mm piping/cording.

Piping and welting are often used to finish home decor projects. This foot can be used to cover double welting cord with your upholstery fabric, and the finished trim can then be glued over exposed staples (on the front of a chair, for example). Single and double piping has many other uses, however. Narrow, flexible piping - whether pre-made, or covered with the same fabric as your project - can add a tailored, professional touch to finishing seams like the edges of colors. Contrasting colors can highlight waist seams, or even princess shaping seams. Double piping can be topstitched onto your project to cover seams, or to highlight shapes. Double welting cord can be sewn underneath your fabric to create textured shapes (welts) on top.

How To Cover Cord for Single Piping:

You will need:

❏     The double piping foot from your Ultimate Presser Feet Set

❏     A single needle

❏     A strip of bias cut fabric 2-3” wide. This can be either premade bias tape, or strips cut on the bias from your project fabric

❏     Cord up to 6mm thick to be covered in fabric

❏     Thread in an appropriate color

  1. Attach the double piping foot to your machine, using your manual and the instructions in this guide. Thread a single needle.
  2. Take your bias strip, and place the cord in the center of the fabric strip. Fold the fabric double around the cord. Make certain that the cord sits snugly in the fabric, with no excess fabric on the fold side.
  3. Position the fabric covered cord under the left groove of the foot, with enough of the fabric and cord hanging out of the back to maintain control.
  4. Select a straight stitch with a short length, and sew along the edge of the cord. The groove on the double piping foot will allow the fabric covered cord to feed smoothly through the machine. Be sure to keep the fabric folded straight, and the cord tucked snugly in the fold to prevent twisting, wrinkles, or excess fabric.

How to Cover Double Cord for Piping:

You will need:

❏     The double welting/piping foot from your Ultimate Presser Feet Set

❏     A single needle

❏     Prepared double welting cord (you can find this in your fabric or craft store)

❏     Bias cut fabric strip 4” wide, either premade or cut from your fabric

❏     Thread in an appropriate color

  1. Attach your double piping foot to your machine, using your user manual and the instructions in this guide.
  2. Thread your machine and single needle with your thread
  3. Lay the prepared double welting cord near the left edge of the bias strip. Fold this near edge across the cord, so that it covers the cord, but with little or no excess hanging over.
  4. Fold the covered cord across the remaining fabric. The double welting cord should now be encased in a tube of fabric, with a double layer of fabric on the bottom. The bottom fabric extends to the right in a wide seam allowance. Note: don’t try to fold all of the fabric around the cord at once. Begin with the first few inches, and continue to wrap as you sew in the next step.
  5. Raise the foot on your machine, and slide the covered cord underneath. Pull an inch or two of the wrapped cord through the back. Lower the double piping foot so that each of the grooves/tunnels sits over one of the cords in the double cord.
  6. Set your machine to a straight stitch. Sew down the center of the fabric wrapped cord. The stitches will go through both layers of fabric on the bottom, fully encasing the double cord. Note: be sure to maintain even wrapping as you go, so that the left edge of the fabric extends all the way underneath the double welting cord.
  7. The excess fabric on the right side can be left as is for a seam allowance, or trimmed close to the seam if the double piping is intended to be top stitched or glued onto the project.
